Travis Kelce’s proposal to Taylor Swift could have looked completely different.
“I once thought I would do it on water,” Travis said on Wednesday’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast, which he cohosts with his brother, Jason Kelce.
“Man, you’ve got to know your gal. You’ve got to know your gal or your significant other. You’ve got to know them. You can’t let how somebody else does it make you feel like you need to do it that way,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end added.
Travis popped the question in a lush garden in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, less than 20 miles away from his $6 million mansion.
“You can’t read about it in a Cosmopolitan magazine, expect that they’re going to know your person. You’ve got to know your person,” his brother, Jason, added.
Travis noted that drawing inspiration from others is fine, but ultimately, the proposal has to fit your partner.
“I would just say know your partner, know who you’re doing it for, and do it for the right reasons, and everything else will be beautiful,” Travis said.
Ajay Anand, the CEO and founder of the diamond retailer Rare Carat, told Business Insider that Swift’s engagement ring “appears to feature an antique old mine brilliant-cut diamond” that was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Swift and Kelce announced their engagement via Instagram last week.
Since she started dating Kelce in 2023, Swift has gone more public with her love life — even looping him into her business ventures.
She welcomed him onstage for a surprise cameo during an Eras Tour show in London and even announced details of her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” on Kelce’s football podcast.
A representative for Kelce did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.
