San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is one of the most polarizing players in the sport. Some feel he is a legitimate franchise player while others think he is merely a product of Kyle Shanahan’s system.

Whatever the case may be, Purdy landed a five-year, $265 million contract extension from the 49ers earlier this offseason, a very hefty contract for the player who was selected with the final selection of the 2022 NFL Draft.

One NFL executive believes that San Francisco could run into some problems this year largely because of Purdy, who the exec clearly feels is not worth the money.

“I think San Francisco is in trouble just a little bit,” the exec said, via Mike Sando of The Athletic. “Their receivers aren’t as good. Their O-line is average. I’m not all-in on Brock Purdy as a $53 million quarterback. Maybe their defense saves them.”

There was a time when the Niners boasted arguably the league’s best roster. Heck, that was probably last September. But injuries and salary cap constraints have largely derailed the 49ers, who went just 6-11 in 2024. That was one season after making it all the way to the Super Bowl.

Purdy certainly did not play his best football last year, throwing for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, in Purdy’s defense, San Francisco’s offense was decimated by injuries. Even Purdy himself dealt with a shoulder issue down the stretch.

But it’s important to remember that the Arizona State product is just two years removed from finishing fourth in MVP voting after registering 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 picks while leading the NFL with a 113 passer rating.

The Niners are once again dealing with injuries heading into 2025, so that could ultimately be their downfall. Or maybe Purdy will continue to regress.

We will see what happens, but it’s obvious that not everyone is on the same page when it comes to Purdy.
