There will never be another athlete like LeBron James: four NBA championships, four NBA Finals MVPs, four MVPs, 42,184 regular-season points. At 40 years old, it would make sense for him to retire, but the King defies expectations. His legendary run in the league, which includes being part of the first father-son duo to play together, is mirrored by his partnership with Nike.
This year, LeBron will begin his 23rd season, which coincides with the 23rd edition of his signature shoe series, the Nike LeBron 23. This entry is significant for the duo, as “23” has been his jersey number for most of his career. Celebrating this, the LeBron 23 is one of Nike Basketball’s most ambitious campaigns ever.
LeBron made it clear to the Nike team that he wanted his 23rd shoe to be the most special addition to his footwear legacy. To accomplish this, Nike immortalized 23 of LeBron’s legacy-defining moments through unique colorways.
The Nike team began with over 50 concepts and, with the help of LeBron himself, refined the list to just 23. When prompted to review the ideas, LeBron dissected the stories that mattered to him. The team expected many of his selections. However, he surprised them with some ideas as well.

Upon finalizing the list, the team created three distinct eras, starting with his tone-setting high school performance on ESPN in 2002 with St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, and stretching through his heroic playoff runs with the Cleveland Cavaliers. From there, “The Decision” marked the beginning of a new chapter in LeBron’s career, ultimately leading to the third era, his return to Cleveland, which brought the city its first championship.
Kicking off this journey is the lead “Uncharted” colorway, which recounts LeBron’s achievement of becoming the first player to reach 40,000 points scored in the regular season. Its all-gold finish utilizes vapor deposition, which Nike had never done before. Meanwhile, the upper’s diamond pattern is a nod to the rarity of this achievement. Beyond its eye-catching composition, a 40,000-point graphic appears at the heel to further commemorate the milestone.
The “Uncharted” pair is just one of 23 stories coming to life with the LeBron 23. These designs feature a graphic upper with details extending the storytelling, and the back of the shoe offers a nod to each theme.
After analyzing a wear-test version of the LeBron 23 that King James wore over the summer, Nike officially shared its technical specifications. His crown logo serves as a cradle for the sneaker, asserting its importance and offering functionality. The dip at the forefoot offers flexibility, while the heightened midfoot provides stability. The heel backs this structure, adding a final layer of support.
Within the shoe is a Nike Basketball first: a ZoomX drop-in. This creation brings maximum responsiveness underfoot while carried by Cushlon 3.0 foam. A full carbon fiber shank completes the sole’s interior, strengthening the shoe’s stability. On the outside, the traction pattern takes on the shape of the number 23, sporting a multi-directional traction pattern that enhances movement in all directions.
The shoe may be the focal point of the purchase, but the Nike Basketball team considered every element involved. The purchase of the LeBron 23 includes several items. Storytelling continues through a booklet that recounts all 23 moments with an in-depth look at each. The graphics on the back of the shoe are also presented as keepsakes, taking the form of charms, jewelry, keychains, and tags. Rounding out the presentation is a special shoe box, which sees the crown shape make another appearance.
“Throughout the year, these 23 moments will be celebrated in particular areas with particular activations at particular moments.”
Nike crafted a storyline through sneakers and has woven it into an entire cohesive collection encompassing a wide range of apparel. 23 graphic tees complement the 23 sneaker colorways, with each one featuring the relevant date of the moment on the back. There are also premium renditions of jerseys from his high school hoops days to the present. These combine a modern fit with premium materials, featuring details like double-knit chenille and embossed suede at the jock tag. The LeBron Signature Collection completes the apparel offerings. This luxe lineup favors beautiful finishes and materials, like a puffer jacket with mesh overlays and zip-off sleeves.
After providing this thorough breakdown of the next chapter in Nike and LeBron’s legacy, three key project team members spoke about the collection and its development. Included are Ross Klein, senior footwear design director at Nike Basketball; Wil Green, senior director of apparel design for Nike Basketball and the NBA; and Jarrett Man, senior director of Nike Basketball footwear.
Were there any considerations from a lifestyle perspective when designing the LeBron 23?
Ross Klein: Basketball is always a mix of performance and culture, or style. Whenever we’re creating a product, we consider how it will look on the court and off of it. This shoe is a performance beast, but elements like the crown, which serves as a cradle, still speak to its lineage of greatness. With the “Uncharted” colorway, the shoe is a statement. Everybody will know you’re wearing LeBrons and ready to take the crucial shots.
Speaking of the “Uncharted” colorway, the upper will change for each pair. Could you expand on that element?
RK: Alongside the thematic graphics is the selection of unique materials. These can range from woven or natural elements to ones we haven’t seen on shoes before. All of that is to accomplish our goal of expressing these stories.
You mentioned a “fit for the king” tagline for the apparel collection.
What role did LeBron play in determining the “fit for the king”?
Wil Green: It’s a lot about how LeBron has positioned himself on and off the court: his style and choices. He also plays a significant role in selecting the materials that we use. Whenever we show LeBron something, he always considers how a texture will feel on your skin. On our end, it’s about pushing things into a modern space. This campaign has allowed us to push the boundaries of our apparel design by utilizing materials we’ve never used in this capacity.
“Also, if somebody gets all 23 [shoes], you may see something a little different.”
The LeBron 23 sports the first-ever ZoomX drop-in. Could you speak to the feedback you’ve received regarding this innovation?
RK: We wear test constantly, especially when working with a product like this. We aim to meet the needs of the next generation of hoopers by emphasizing agility and responsiveness through multi-directional flow. We challenged ourselves to iterate upon our sole structure to accommodate this. Initially, we had a very thick ZoomX layer, which was too compressive for players who want quick elevation. We constantly tuned the thickness until we struck the right balance.
Can you describe how fans will engage with each of the 23 moments as they are presented?
Jarrett Man: One of the most exciting things is that we deliberately scripted this journey. While we laid things out chronologically, the consumer will follow along in a special way. Throughout the year, these 23 moments will be celebrated in particular areas with particular activations at particular moments. I don’t want to give it all away, but I’m sure fans will enjoy reliving these moments again.
RK: Also, if somebody gets all 23, you may see something a little different.
Wil, on the apparel side of things, this project offered a unique opportunity to work so closely with other teams. Did this process feel different to you? And how did you enjoy it?
WG: This was definitely different. We started together and we finished together. This crew became a family with how we looked after and supported one another. I pushed the hardest I’ve ever pushed to deliver because I saw how invested everyone else was.
As we built the stories, we evaluated the unique elements that celebrate each moment as a cohesive team. This journey was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and an amazing process we all learned from.
The Nike LeBron 23 “Uncharted” will initially launch in China on September 25. From there, it will see a global drop take place on October 3, with additional pairs arriving in the following months.
