While there was no $1.1 billion jackpot winner in Monday night’s Powerball drawing, one lucky ticket worth over a million dollars was purchased in Los Angeles.
The winning $1,378,451 ticket was bought at a 76 gas station on the 14400 block of Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, according to the California Lottery website.
Million-dollar winners were also found in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey (2), New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Two ticket holders in Montana and North Carolina each won $2 million.
Payouts in some states, including California, are based on a “pari-mutuel” system based on ticket sales and number of winners, and differ from the fixed prizes shown on the Powerball website.
No one has matched all six numbers since May 31, allowing the jackpot to swell to $1.3 billion, which would be the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history if there is a winner in the drawing Wednesday night.
The odds of matching all six numbers are astronomical: 1 in 292.2 million. The odds of getting struck by lightning are far greater. But with so many people putting down money for a chance at life-changing wealth, someone eventually wins.
If you’re ready to test your odds, the next drawing is scheduled for September 3. Powerball tickets are $2 each and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
