Summary

  • Mortal Kombat II has been delayed to May 15, 2026, for a prime summer release slot
  • The film will introduce fan-favorite Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban
  • The cast will also feature new characters and the return of some who died in the first film

Fans will have to wait longer to witness the next chapter in the bloody saga as Warner Bros. officially pushes the release of Mortal Kombat II to May 15, 2026, a significant delay from its original October 2025 date. This strategic move is not due to production issues—reports from test screenings have been strong—but rather to secure a more lucrative summer release window.

The Simon McQuoid-directed film, a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, is set to introduce a host of new and returning characters, with a major focus on the highly anticipated debut of Johnny Cage. The Boys star Karl Urban will bring the arrogant Hollywood martial artist to life, reportedly portraying him at a low point in his career as he’s “reluctantly drawn” into the high-stakes tournament.

The core cast from the first film, including Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion) are all set to return. They will be joined by new faces like Martyn Ford as the menacing Shao Kahn, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. The cast also includes Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, who has the power to resurrect fan favorites who met their demise in the first film, teasing the return of characters like Kano and Bi-Han. With this deep roster and a new cinematic tournament, the sequel is poised to be an even bigger event.
