The New York Mets have been one of the more aggressive teams in baseball over the last few years, but they don’t have much to show for it. It’s likely they’ll continue to ramp up the aggressiveness on the trade block and in free agency until they see some serious postseason success.
Last offseason, the Mets stole superstar outfielder Juan Soto from the New York Yankees. This offseason, the Mets could look to steal another star outfielder, Cody Bellinger, from the Yankees.
Recently, MLB insider Jon Heyman called the Mets a potential fit for Bellinger when the slugger lands in free agency this winter.
With Bellinger playing so well this season, there’s a chance he lands a contract worth north of $100 million or $150 million if the bidding war gets off on the right foot.
At a rate like that, the Yankees and Mets are two of the teams that could afford to bring him in.
The Mets are in desperate need of an outfielder, and Bellinger would fill that hole in a huge way. The veteran outfielder has voiced his eagerness to remain with a contending team, so the Mets could be a good fit.
But the Yankees have seemingly loved having Bellinger on the roster. He’s going to be their top free agent of the winter, so it’s hard to imagine the Bronx Bombers will let him walk without a fight.
The Bellinger sweepstakes will only heat up as the offseason goes on. But for now, the star is a huge piece of the Yankees’ roster that’s pushing for an American League East title and potentially a World Series championship.
