Cubs’ Kyle Tucker Expected To Land $400-Plus Million Free Agency Deal

The Chicago Cubs made the blockbuster move during the offseason to land superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker. The Cubs sent infielder Isaac Paredes and top prospect Cam Smith to the Houston Astros in exchange for Tucker.

But it didn’t take long for fans to begin to speculate whether this would be Tucker’s only season in the Windy City. The superstar outfielder is on an expiring contract, and the Cubs aren’t necessarily notorious for signing players to mega-contracts. In fact, the largest contract the Cubs have ever signed was worth less than $200 million.

To make matters worse, MLB insider Jon Heyman recently predicted that Tucker could sign a deal worth $400-plus million this offseason, though he noted that he didn’t think the star would land a $500 million deal.

There are only a few teams that could afford to give out this kind of mega-contract, and it’s tough to tell if the Cubs will be one of them.

It’s likely that they try to re-sign him, but once the number reaches $350 million or $400 million, the Cubs might not be able to keep up with the biggest spenders like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Mets.

At the end of the day, there are more factors that go into a free agency decision than simply the money. Tucker will likely be looking to sign a deal that takes him through the majority of the rest of his career. If the Cubs can make the money and fit work, they have a chance to land him. But a $400 million price tag is a steep ask to Chicago’s front office.
