Thousands of residents gathered Monday for the 46th Annual Labor Day Parade, Picnic and Rally in Wilmington, an event hosted by the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition.
The day began with parade assembly at 8 a.m. at Broad and E streets. The procession starts at 10 a.m., traveling along E Street to Avalon Boulevard before concluding at Banning Park on M Street.
The one-mile route typically features marching bands, union delegations, floats and community groups.
At noon, a rally at Banning Park will highlight workers’ push for stronger protections and opposition to what organizers describe as a “billionaire takeover.” The rally will be followed by a free picnic with live entertainment, food and beverages.
Similar “stop the billionaire takeover” rallies will also be held across Los Angeles County. The demonstrations, organized by the group May Day Strong, aimed to build momentum from May Day rallies earlier this year.
In a statement, organizers said billionaires are waging “a war on working people” with support from administration officials, immigration enforcement, and law enforcement. They said Monday’s rallies underscored demands.
- Stop the billionaire takeover corrupting our government.
- Protect and defend Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs for working people.
- Fully funded schools, healthcare and housing for all.
- Stop the attacks on immigrants, Black, indigenous, trans people, and all our communities.
- Invest in people not wars.
“Working people built this nation and we know how to take care of each other. We won’t back down—we will never stop fighting for our families and the rights and freedoms that ensure access to opportunity and a better life for all Americans. The billionaire’s time is up,” organizers said in a statement.
Participants are encouraged to gather not only at parades and rallies, but also outside corporate offices and congressional buildings to press their demands.
