A Texas woman’s casual search on Google Earth has led to a deeply emotional discovery.
She shared her find in an Instagram reel, proving that the most-precious family memories can be found in the most-unexpected places.
Kimberly Burleson, 56, was searching through the app’s “time capsule” feature when she stumbled upon a scene of her family from 2007 that brought her to tears. She told Newsweek about the discovery and her memory of that time, unexpectedly preserved online.
“I’m just seeing that Google captured my heart in 2007 and I’m in tears,” Burleson wrote in her Instagram reel.
For Burleson, the moment felt like a pause button on a memory she never knew had been recorded.
“Google had captured not just my house, but a moment in time,” she said. “My heart felt like it skipped a beat seeing this scene.”
A Bittersweet Time Period
The emotional impact of the photo was tied to the time period it captured. While the image shows a happy, simple moment of the family playing fetch with their dog, it was simultaneously a time of great hardship for them.
“My dad, who lived two houses down, had just died, and, six months after these images were taken, we would almost lose our son to a brain virus,” Burleson said.
The image of her beloved dog, Sami, was particularly meaningful.
“She was an earth angel in dog form,” Burleson said. The canine had an “uncanny ability in knowing who needed her most—and was always there with a look of love and concern as she leaned into the person she was there to care for.”
Seeing Sami again, Burleson said, was a poignant reminder of the deep love they shared, and the comfort the dog brought the family in a time of grief and illness.
People online were struck by the preserved scene, too, echoing Burleson’s nostalgia.
“In another universe, the world is still like that, unchanged,” one person wrote.
“Don’t you wish pictures could take us back there for a day?” another posted.
The Power of Preserved Memories
Burleson said Sami would pass away 10 years later, and that her son survived his illness. Her sister’s family now lives in her late parents’ home two doors down, and she still resides in the same “little house” in Texas.
The Google Earth photo, a seemingly random capture, has become a cherished part of her family’s history.
“I felt a gratefulness to Google Earth for capturing this moment in time,” Burleson said.
The viral video is a testament to the fact that, while some moments may be lost in time, others may be preserved through unsuspecting means for future generations to discover.
