The Milwaukee Brewers announced Monday that veteran catcher Jorge Alfaro exercised the release clause in his minor league deal, making him a free agent.

Alfaro, 32, joined the Brewers on a minor league deal this past January. However, he never earned a major league call up, and is now seeking a new opportunity where he’ll hope to get back to the big leagues.
Alfaro appeared in 82 games at Triple-A for the Brewers this season, slashing .244/.285/.430 with 15 home runs, 49 runs batted in and an OPS of .715. He played 58 games at catcher and 24 games at designated hitter.
The Brewers have two-time All-Star catcher William Contreras as the team’s everyday starter. Behind him is veteran Danny Jansen, who the team acquired ahead of the trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Rays. Before Jansen, they had veteran catcher Eric Haase.

The other catcher on the 40-man roster is top prospect Jeferson Quero. Thus, Alfaro had a tough hill to climb to reach the majors with the MLB-best Brewers, so he is heading to free agency where he’ll look to bring catching depth to another organization.

Alfaro’s career began in 2010, when he signed with the Texas Rangers as an international free agent at 16 years old.
He then worked his way up the minor league ladder before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the 2015 trade deadline in a blockbuster deal that brought Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman to Texas.
He debuted with the Phillies in 2016 and gradually earned more playing time in each of the next few seasons, culminating in a 108-appearance season in 2018, his final year with the Phillies.
He was then traded to the Miami Marlins in a package that brought J.T. Realmuto to Philadelphia. He appeared in a career-high 130 games with Miami in 2019, hitting .262 with 18 home runs, 57 RBIs and an OPS of .736.

Alfaro has struggled since then, remaining with the Marlins until 2021 before spending the 2022 season with the San Diego Padres and the 2023 season split between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies. Alfaro’s last MLB appearance came with the Red Sox in 2023.
Across his eight-season career, Alfaro is a .253 hitter with 48 home runs, 198 RBIs and an OPS of .695. He’s mainly a catcher with limited experience at first base and in left field (and minimal experience at third base and in right field).
