Sean Manaea Frustrated For Not Pulling His Weight In Mets’ Starting Rotation

Sean Manaea knows he has to turn things around quickly for the New York Mets if they want to have success in the playoffs.

After an abysmal game against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, his ERA ballooned to 5.60 for the Mets. Manaea was quick to hold himself accountable after the game.

“I have high expectations for myself, I know this organization does,” Manaea told Will Sammon of The Athletic. “Everyone’s pulling their weight, everyone’s doing their thing, and I’m just not. It’s very frustrating.”

Questions have started to blossom about how much longer Manaea will be in the rotation — at least for this season. Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong have taken their opportunities in stride, and Brandon Sproat is getting closer to the big leagues.

“If the Mets call up Sproat, it’s unclear what his presence would mean for either Senga or Manaea,” wrote Sammon. “In the meantime, Manaea, who threw his fastball 73 percent of the time Monday — too often leaving it over the middle and belt-high — said he is healthy and not bothered by the loose bodies in his left elbow. Manaea said he has ‘no idea’ why he has struggled so much.”

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was quick to come to Manaea’s defense after the game.

“They’re part of the rotation,” Mendoza said, referencing Manaea and Kodai Senga who is also struggling. “So our job is trying to find a way to help them.”

That help may need to wait until the offseason and spring training next year, because the focus now needs to be on the final month of the regular season and the playoffs.

For now though, Manaea will continue to pitch every five days until told otherwise.
