Juan Soto isn’t a stranger to “overrated” chants from opposing fan bases, but he always looks for ways to silence his haters.
He did just that Monday as the New York Mets rallied multiple times to beat the Detroit Tigers, and Soto didn’t shy away from addressing the chants and the perception around him when speaking postgame.
“This is the month,” Soto told Will Sammon of The Athletic. “I feel like whoever gets hot in September is the team that goes all the way.”
His manager, Carlos Mendoza, was quick to speak on Soto’s behalf as well.
“It’s a show,” Mendoza told Sammon postgame. “Every time he’s at the plate, you want to watch it. It’s pretty special, and I’m glad he’s on our team.”
Soto’s bat was on fire on Monday as the Mets scored 10 runs against the Tigers; he drove in six of them himself. Four of them came via his grand slam, the first home run for Soto this season with more than one runner on base.
The $765 million star was a fraction of his former self in the first half of the season, but as Steve Kornacki from MLB.com pointed out, Soto got hot at the same time the weather did outside.
“Mendoza added that Soto’s now ‘the complete package’ after entering June with only nine homers and 27 RBIs – good but not great numbers,” wrote Kornacki. “He has 27 homers and 63 RBIs since.”
The Mets enter Tuesday six games back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East title. It’ll take a lot to catch the Phillies this late in the season, but New York will never say never as long as Soto continues to rake.
