For a business that sells a lot of lumber, paint, and other building supplies, Home Depot is increasingly focused on tech.

In addition to being the largest home improvement chain in the world, the orange-aproned retailer relies on a large and growing tech workforce to power its effort to put more digital tools in the hands of employees and its DIY and pro customers.

The company is also increasingly using AI and machine learning to optimize the flow of freight to ensure items are stocked where they are most needed.

Home Depot’s EVP for US stores, Ann-Marie Campbell, said in an August earnings call that the investments in tech are helping improve the in-store shopping experience, increase delivery speed and accuracy, and simplify projects for contractors.

Company filings with the US Department of Labor show Home Depot sought to hire 292 workers through the US H-1B visa program in the first three quarters of this reporting year, largely in software development and operations research. That number is similar to the same period the year before and up from about 215 from two years ago.

By comparison, rival Lowe’s sought to hire 258 workers from the H-1B program during the same period this year.

Business Insider analyzed how much money companies from Apple to Walmart are paying for tech jobs and other roles. Explore salary data from America’s biggest employers.

This publicly available work visa data — which companies are required to disclose — only refers to foreign hires and doesn’t include equity or other benefits that employees may receive in addition to their base pay. Home Depot said in a statement that it also offers employees performance-based bonuses, stock purchase opportunities, benefits, and training and development programs.

Still, the reported pay rates are benchmarked against industry averages for US workers. That can shed light not just on how much employees earn in certain roles, but where a company is looking to grow.

Home Depot employs more than 470,000 workers. It listed roughly 20,000 open jobs on its careers website as of August 26, with about 2,200 openings for corporate roles.

In the H-1B data, most of the positions are based near the company’s Atlanta headquarters, with additional roles in several other states.

Here’s a deeper look at some of the jobs:
