President Donald Trump posting a week-old photo has heightened scrutiny of his health.
Amid continued concerns about his physical well-being, Trump posted an image of himself playing golf with a former football coach. But, given the photo was taken a week ago, people raised concerns about a potential attempt to hoodwink the public about the true state of the president’s condition.
There is no evidence to suggest the President’s health is in any imminent danger, and Newsweek contacted the White House by email for comment on this story.
Why It Matters
Lately, Trump has been hit with rumors that he is in bad health, not least because of photos of him at various events which purported to show swellings and bruises on his legs. These rumors intensified after he was not seen in public for several days in August, though he has since been spotted playing golf.
In July, the White House announced that Trump, 79, who at the beginning of his second term became the oldest person sworn in as president, had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), something his doctor described as “benign and common.” CVI is a condition in which the veins in the legs are unable to efficiently return blood to the heart. It is not life-threatening.
What To Know
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump posted a photo of a golf trip with former football coach Jon Gruden. “Great playing Golf with Jon Gruden – A really nice guy, and true character!” he wrote on Sunday.
However, posting on X, people pointed out that the image is a week old.
Travis Akers, a retired U.S. Navy intelligence officer wrote: “I’m not a conspiracy theory guy, but if you’re fighting off increasing rumors that you may have suffered a major medical episode and to disprove that rumor and provide proof of life, you post a picture of allegedly playing golf with Jon Gruden today, it would be beneficial to post one that wasn’t from August 23rd.”
Political consultant Fred Wellman wrote: “This is insane. The President of the United States is obviously lying about his activities and the lack of curiosity by the media is stunning.”
Matt Rein, who works with Democrats wrote: “Is it not very bizarre to any reporter that Trump/The WH and their allies are trying to pass off a photo of Trump and Gruden as having been taken today, and not last week?”
What People Are Saying
Vice President JD Vance told USA Today last week: “I feel very confident the president of the United States is in good shape, is going to serve out the remainder of his term and do great things for the American people. He added that the president is in “incredibly good health” and has “incredible energy.”
Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, in a July memo: “The president underwent a comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies. Bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency, a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”
On Truth Social, Trump responded to rumors about his health, writing: “NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.”
What Happens Next
Though Trump’s medical team has said he is in good health, scrutiny over his health is likely to continue.
