Summary

  • Disney has announced a new original animated film titled Hexed, set for release in November 2026The plot follows a teenage boy and his mother who discover the boy’s magical powersThe film marks a return to original storytelling for Disney Animation

Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on its next major original film, Hexed, setting a theatrical release for November 2026. The announcement, made at this year’s Destination D23, signals a renewed focus on new, original storytelling for the iconic studio, which has recently leaned heavily on sequels to its most successful franchises like Frozen and Zootopia.

The film’s plot promises a captivating mix of fantasy and heartfelt family drama. Hexed follows an awkward teenage boy and his highly-organized, “Type-A” mother whose lives are irrevocably changed when they discover the boy’s odd behavior and strange habits are, in fact, magical powers. This revelation doesn’t just alter their reality; it thrusts them into a secret, hidden world of magic they never knew existed. The story seems to be a classic Disney tale of embracing your unique identity and finding where you belong, all through the lens of a mother-son relationship navigating an extraordinary circumstance.

Behind the scenes, the film is helmed by a pair of talented Disney veterans. Hexed is directed by Josie Trinidad, who was the co-head of story for the Academy Award-winning Zootopia and Jason Hand , who served as co-director on the smash hit Moana 2. This project marks a significant step for the studio, which is looking to recapture the magic of original hits like Encanto and Raya and the Last Dragon with this new magical tale.
