Dangerous surf prompts Labor Day warnings in Southern California

If you’re heading to the beach for a break from the heat this Labor Day, be aware that officials are warning of dangerous surf conditions continuing through the day on Monday.

A “long period south swell” bringing elevated surf conditions — up to 6 feet — and strong rip currents to Los Angeles County and Ventura County beaches prompted a hazardous beach statement from the National Weather Service.

The largest surf is expected along the south-facing beaches, especially from Point Mugu to Malibu.

“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore,” the NWS said.

Rip currents and elevated surf between 3 and 5 feet, with some sets to 6 feet, have Orange County beaches under a hazardous beach statement as well on Monday.

Swimmers caught in a rip current will feel themselves being pulled away from shore. Instead of fighting the momentum, officials say to escape by swimming parallel to shore, then returning to safety once you’re out of the current.

Beachgoers were urged to swim near a lifeguard. Inexperienced swimmers should consider staying out of the water altogether.

The swell is expected to gradually lower on Tuesday.
