Los Angeles | $2.995 million

A 1924 Spanish-style house, on 0.1 acres

This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house and its one-bedroom, one-bathroom guesthouse are just off a bustling stretch of Melrose Avenue, within walking distance of several cocktail bars, vintage clothing stores and the original location of Pink’s Hot Dogs. A public elementary school is also within walking distance, as is Fairfax High School, where the parking lot becomes a flea market on Sundays.

By car, the Grove — with retail, restaurants and entertainment — is five minutes away, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is about 10 minutes away. Downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica are both a half-hour drive.

Size: 2,268 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,321

Indoors: From the street, a stepped walkway passes a wood fence and the front yard to a green entry door.

Inside, the living room has a large street-facing window with stained-glass accents. A skylight brings in extra light, and hardwood floors continue into a dining area with its own stained-glass window and a fireplace with a tile surround.

Behind the dining area is the kitchen, where the countertops are Carrara marble. A center island fits four bar stools and holds a white farmhouse sink. A powder room is off the kitchen, as is a closet that holds a side-by-side washer and dryer.

Two bedrooms are at the back of the house, including the primary suite. There, a set of doors opens to the pool and the walls are covered in wood paneling painted white. The primary bathroom has a combined tub and shower, and beyond it is a walk-in closet. Across the hall are a bedroom big enough for a queen-size bed and a second full bathroom, this one has a walk-in shower and hexagonal floor tiles.

The third bedroom, off a short hall from the kitchen, is set up as a nursery, with two windows and a closet.

Outdoor space: Outside, the in-ground pool is surrounded by grass, with space for a sitting area at one end and mature trees at the other. The garage has been converted into a guesthouse with a living room, a separate bedroom and a full bathroom. The driveway fits two cars.

Taxes: $37,440 (estimated)

Palm Springs | $2.995 million

A desert retreat built in 1981, on 0.4 acres

This three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom house, which has an attached one-bathroom casita, is in the Movie Colony East section of Palm Springs, on the same street as Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms estate. North Palm Canyon Drive is a few blocks away, putting the house within walking distance of antique stores, coffee shops, and resorts. Desert Regional Medical Center is less than five minutes away by car, as is Palm Springs International Airport.

Palm Desert is 30 minutes away, and La Quinta is a 40-minute drive. Joshua Tree National Park is an hour’s drive and Los Angeles takes two hours.

Size: 3,365 square feet

Price per square foot: $890

Indoors: A tall palm tree stands in this home’s front yard, and a paved path links the street to the entryway. A carved wood door opens to a foyer, and steps lead down to a sunken living room with high coffered ceilings, built-in cabinets and a fireplace.

A few steps up is a dining area with a wide picture window and easy access to the kitchen, where globe-style lights hang above a center island, sliding-glass doors face a patio and the pale pink walls are trimmed with tile of a similar color. Both a laundry room and powder room are off the kitchen.

The primary suite is off the foyer, through a set of double doors. The bedroom, big enough for a king-size bed, has two closets and direct access to a sunroom used as a home gym. In the primary bathroom are a soaking tub, a separate shower and a dry sauna.

Two more bedrooms, off a hall at the end of the foyer, are also big enough for king-size beds, and each has its own bathroom. The attached casita, which has a separate entrance, has a round window and a kitchenette, plus a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: At the center of the backyard is an in-ground saltwater pool, with pergola-covered patios for lounging and dining on either side. The backyard also has a built-in grill. Mature olive, palm and citrus trees line the property. The attached two-car garage has a built-in electric vehicle charger.

Taxes: $37,440 (estimated)

Sunnyvale | $2.998 million

A Joseph Eichler house built in 1970, on 0.2 acres

This four-bedroom, two-bathroom house was designed by Claude Oakland in the double-gable atrium style, a particularly sought-after design in the portfolio of the developer Joseph Eichler. It’s 10 minutes by car from the center of Sunnyvale. There’s a park, a shopping center with a supermarket and a Nepalese restaurant, and several public schools within walking distance. The Apple campuses in Sunnyvale and Cupertino are both about 10 minutes away by car. Mountain View and Palo Alto are both less than 20 minutes away.

Driving into downtown San Jose takes half an hour, Big Basin Redwoods State Park takes 40 minutes and Santa Cruz takes less than an hour.

Size: 1,989 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,507

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, with a green door at the end of the driveway leading to the central atrium. From here, sliding-glass doors open to a foyer with tiled floors and the living room straight ahead. A fireplace has a floor-to-ceiling red brick surround framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, and the ceilings have their original stain.

Off one side of the living room is a sunny dining area, and beyond it is the kitchen, where the cabinets and Formica countertops are also original. On the other side of a kitchen island is a family room with tiled floors and access to the atrium.

Three of the four bedrooms are off a hallway that begins in the foyer, with the primary suite at one end. It has doors that open to the backyard, and wood beams line the ceiling. The primary bathroom has a walk-in shower and a vanity topped with a long mirror.

Two bedrooms at the other end of the hall have carpeted floors and closets, and a second full bathroom has a combined tub and shower. The fourth bedroom, set up as an office, is off the atrium, with walls of glass and a clerestory window with a view of tree branches.

Outdoor space: Behind the house is a paved patio with one section partially shaded by a wood pergola. The backyard beyond the patio is landscaped with a mix of grass and flowering plants along a wood fence. An attached garage fits two cars.

Taxes: $37,476 (estimated)
