PHOENIX — A woman is dead after she was allegedly shot in the head by a Phoenix man in Payson in Saturday, authorities said.
Donald Nash, 22, was arrested in connection with the deadly incident, according to the Payson Police Department.
He faces charges of second-degree murder, resisting arrest and three counts of felony endangerment.
What led to the woman being shot by the Phoenix man?
Officers responded to a Denny’s near Bonita Street and Beeline Highway just before 10 a.m. regarding reports of a woman being shot in a vehicle.
When police arrived on scene, they detained Nash and quickly rendered aid to the female victim who was later identified as 20-year-old Keonna Honanie, also from Phoenix.
Payson Fire Department and AMR ambulance took over the lifesaving efforts and took Honanie to Banner Payson Medical Center.
Honanie was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The shooting investigation revealed that Nash and Honanie were passengers in the backseat of a white Honda Pilot SUV.
Nash and Honanie were arguing as the vehicle drove through Payson, and during the disagreement Nash allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Honanie in the head.
There were three other passengers in the car at the time of the shooting, including a 1-year-old who was sat next Honanie.
Traffic on the highway was shut down for a little more than three hours as detectives investigated.
Anyone that was traveling alongside the vehicle at the time of the shooting or that has any additional information on the incident is asked to contact the Payson Police Department at 928-474-5177.
The investigation is ongoing.
