TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) — Yellow is universally known as the color of hope and folks wore it from head to toe Saturday afternoon to pray for August Borden.
“We’re stronger together than fighting this all alone, mentally and physically,” community prayer organizer Karleigh Hoagland said.
August Borden was airlifted to UAB with life-threatening injuries on August 19. It remains unclear how August got those injuries.
He’s known as cheerful and athletic with a heart of gold, making yellow the perfect color to pray in his honor.
“He’s Jesus on two wheels, if you know what I mean. He’d give you the shirt off his back. He wouldn’t hurt a fly,” Hoagland said.
August spent two days at the hospital and is now back home healing. His grandmother, Linda Mance, said they’re taking his recovery one day at a time.
“His feeling hasn’t come back into the bottom of his face, you know, on that side that he was hurt so bad. And, you know, he just feels terrible,” Mance said. “He sleeps most of the time.”
Mance added that she cannot express enough gratitude to the Tuscumbia community for their continued support during such a difficult time.
That’s a sentiment August’s mom, Kristen Van Devender, agrees with.
“Very grateful. Feels good to have support from our community and that people care for August, and for him to get better,” Van Devender said. “And to find out what really happened to him.”
That question, ‘How did August get those injuries?’, remains unanswered and unknown. But his mom and the Tuscumbia community are optimistic that those answers are right around the corner.
“We are hopeful. So someone will come forward and give us the answers we are looking for, and the truth,” Van Devender said.
The Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office is now investigating, along with other law enforcement agencies.
