The Boston Red Sox have locked down a current member of what has been an excellent season.
MLB writer Francys Romero reported Saturday that Boston has agreed to an extension with closer Aroldis Chapman. The deal reportedly runs through next season and includes an option for the 2027 season.
Chapman is in his first season with the Red Sox after spending all of last year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He had a manageable 3.79 ERA with Pittsburgh but has more than turned that around this season.
At 37 years old, Chapman is turning in the best year of his career. He entered Sunday with a 1.04 ERA with 26 saves across 57 appearances and 52 innings pitched. Chapman’s overall body of work this season has been excellent, but his last month-plus has been the best of his career.
Forget not allowing a run. Chapman has not allowed a singular hit since July 23, the same day as his last run allowed. That makes 14 straight scoreless and hitless appearances from the flame-throwing lefty.

It is a remarkable run for one of the best closers in the history of MLB and he is being rewarded for his excellent performance. His extension is reportedly worth $13.3 million next season with the amount for the potential 2027 option.
Boston now has one less position to worry about filling in the offseason and can prioritize more important things like its starting rotation and making sure Alex Bregman wants to remain with the team for the final two seasons of his contract.
