The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the best teams in baseball this season, but they could use some insurance in the starting rotation.
Zack Wheeler will miss the rest of the season, and the Phillies could use some insurance in the starting rotation. The Boston Red Sox recently released Walker Buehler, and FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggested he could be an interesting option for the team.
Buehler has not had a good season. He has a 5.45 ERA and was a failed signing by the Red Sox. He struggled last season as well, but was a star during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ postseason run.
Even if Buehler is not used as a starter in Philadelphia, he could serve as a valuable arm in the bullpen. At worst, he is an insurance policy against any more starting pitching injuries. The team moved on from Joe Ross and recently placed Jordan Romano on the injured list.
The biggest asset Buehler could provide the Phillies is in the postseason. He is a two-time World Series champion and has shown that he can overcome a terrible regular season to shine in October.
“Buehler, to his credit, was an absolute riser in the 2024 playoffs,” wrote Kline. “Granted he was playing for the most loaded team in MLB, but Buehler was able to toggle effortlessly between the rotation and the bullpen and record a ton of important outs for L.A. — including the final three outs of the World Series to close out New York.”
He allowed six earned runs in 15 innings pitched. However, all six runs came in the second inning in a start against the San Diego Padres. He had 13 strikeouts in his final 13 postseason innings and picked up a World Series-clinching save on one day of rest.
