Hearts have been melted after a two-legged dachshund who was surrendered because she likely “wouldn’t make it” has been given a second chance at life.

At just a few days old, Blessit the dachshund was surrendered by her owners because of her disability. The sweet pup doesn’t have two front legs, but it’s unclear whether she was born without them, or if her mother potentially ate them.

As much as her previous owners thought that Blessit “wouldn’t make it,” Abigail Thomas is so thankful they didn’t have the dog euthanized straight away. Thomas, 23, knew she could help the adorable puppy, and she didn’t hesitate to adopt the dog in 2021.

“I understand some people not wanting to take on the responsibility of a disabled animal, but I so am happy they surrendered her and did not euthanize her automatically,” Thomas, of Louisiana said.

After taking Blessit in, Thomas began bottle feeding her and raised her “like a normal pup.” Thomas believed in Blessit and wanted her to have a chance to thrive, because it was clear she was capable of doing just that.

At first, Blessit was only the size of Thomas’s hand, and she was able to sleep soundly in just her owner’s palm. But with lots of care and nurturing, she grew, and her personality began to shine through.

“She’s always been the best girl, and she has no idea that she’s different,” Thomas continued.

Blessit has become adept at hopping around on her back legs, but Thomas has also got her a dog-friendly wheelchair to help. Although that hasn’t been without its difficulties, as Thomas joked that trying to get Blessit to actually use the wheelchair is the biggest challenge they’ve faced.

She may have had a difficult start to life, but Blessit has been able to continuously grow and adapt ever since. She’s even got plenty of animal siblings of varying sizes who help care for her, including a mastiff and a beagle among others. Blessit can be shy around other dogs at times, but once she warms up or gets to know them, she loves to play.

Thomas is so proud of her two-legged rescue pup, and she shared a post on TikTok (@abigail_thomas_) showing just how far she’s come. The post included a slideshow of images, ranging from Blessit when she was surrendered in a cardboard box, to being bottle fed, and now at the age of 4 playing with her besties.

The TikTok post has left internet users in tears as it’s gone viral with over 2.2 million views and 387,800 likes at the time of writing. The caption alongside the clip reads: “everything deserves a chance.”

Thomas and Blessit have created so many memories together since 2021, and it breaks her heart to think that none of that would have been possible if Blessit wasn’t given the opportunity.

“It makes me sad to think that she would never have even gotten the chance to try to live, because this little girl wanted to live so bad,” Thomas told Newsweek.

The online response to Blessit’s story has been overwhelmingly positive. In just a matter of days, the TikTok post has generated over 7,500 comments already, as internet users praised Thomas for saving the two-legged dog’s life.

One comment reads: “not the puppy glow up making me sob, this is so beautiful to watch.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “She’s absolutely perfect thank you for saving her.”

While another commenter added: “Immediately sobbing when I saw the first set of wheels. I know this baby knows LOVE.”
