Tulane’s Jon Sumrall Sends Warning After Northwestern’s Pre-Game Disrespect

Tulane Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall will not tolerate any disrespect for the city of New Orleans.

Sumrall sent the message loudly and clearly while speaking to reporters postgame after perceived disrespect from Northwestern University denying their request to wear white, just as the program did 20 years ago after Hurricane Katrina hit the area.

“When you disrespect the city of New Orleans, you’re going to run into it. … I’m not trying to be a jerk but don’t disrespect the City of New Orleans,” Sumrall said postgame.

As the Times-Picayune’s Jeff Duncan noted, Saturday was Tulane’s tribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina — and there were other gestures the Green Wave wanted to make.

“Tulane was forced to play its first game after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 without helmet decals (vs. Mississippi State in Shreveport). Today’s ‘no-decal’ look was the school’s way of recognizing the 2005 team and the 20-year anniversary of the storm,” Duncan wrote.

Jon Sumrall Predicted to Leave Tulane

Sumrall is entering his second season in the Big Easy after a successful start to his head coaching career with the Troy Trojans. Even with all the pride the Huntsville, Alabama, native has for New Orleans, he may not be there long.

The Advocate’s Kyle Whitfield predicts Sumrall will be the next in a line of Tulane coaches who are destined for bigger and better things after the season.

“Jon Sumrall has been the second-straight successful Tulane hire. He likely won’t be in New Orleans next season, assuming Tulane has a good season. But clearly Sumrall gets it, like Willie Fritz, when it comes to football, Tulane and New Orleans,” Whitfield wrote.

Sumrall is a rising star in the coaching realm. College football’s biggest conferences are set to have a coaching carousel unmatched by the past few years during this next cycle.

Whitfield may be onto something, as unfortunate as that is for the Green Wave.
