It was a chaotic training camp and preseason for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. The national media has speculated whether he has a grasp of head coach Ben Johnson’s offense heading into Week 1.
Earlier this month, there was video taken of Williams missing his target while throwing into a net is indicative of his progress in training camp. The preseason was a mixed bag, with the USC product looking sharp against the Buffalo Bills but then frustrating in the matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nonetheless, that’s all behind Williams and former Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long stated that, despite all the talk, Chicago has a good quarterback under center.
“News flash, Bears fans: Your quarterback is good,” Long said during his appearance 670 The Score. “Your quarterback is talented. I would just urge him not to put any limits on himself. Throw all the expectations out the window and just continue to get better, because the sky truly is the limit.”
Despite what many in the sports media might say, whether Williams will have a grasp of Johnson’s offense, Long believes this marriage will work and is excited for what these two can do in Chicago.
“The marriage between him and Ben Johnson is awesome,” Long added. “It’s everything you could dream of as a Bears fan. And look, I can’t imagine how the city would respond if this team comes to fruition and is a champion team here in the coming years. It’s going to be really special. I’m glad I’ve been in support of it since the beginning.”

Chicago opens up the 2025 season with games against the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. While the Bears will want wins in both of these contests, keeping Williams protected and having him look comfortable in the offense will be just as important.
Nonetheless, even if the Bears lose both games, he knows that Williams can get through it because of the adversity the young signal caller has faced.
“What I saw from the rook was toughness in the face of regime change, in the face of adversity,” Long said. “There were different guys out there protecting him, and he never threw his teammates under the bus. He got his on the turf every time, and he went to work. And I respect that.”
