The Detroit Tigers came into last offseason with some money to spend and a lot of aggressiveness.
They made a few solid moves to boost their roster, but the decision to sign veteran pitcher Alex Cobb left a lot of Tigers fans and MLB analysts scratching their heads. This decision never quite made that much sense.
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently bashed the Tigers for their decision to sign Cobb to a $15 million deal during the offseason. Rotman listed it as the biggest free agency disaster of the offseason.
“The Detroit Tigers giving 37-year-old Alex Cobb a one-year, $15 million deal felt awfully questionable following a season in which he made just five starts between the regular season and postseason, especially when taking his lengthy injury history into account,” Rotman wrote. “Even Cobb admitted he thought about retirement before the Tigers and some other teams expressed interest in signing him.
“The deal has aged worse than Tigers fans could’ve expected. Cobb suffered a hip injury before spring training and has been dealing with issues in both of his hips all season long. He’s been able to make nine starts across a couple of different rehab stints, but he was just pulled off his recent rehab assignment with hip soreness.”
Cobb has yet to pitch this season due to injuries throughout the last few months, making this the worst contract handed out last offseason.
It’s impossible to predict a pitcher to miss the entire season with injuries, especially considering Cobb was healthy at the time of signing. But it’s also impossible to justify signing a pitcher who’s contemplating retirement to a $15 million deal.
The Tigers messed up badly with this one.
