University of Miami linebacker Adarius Hayes has been arrested in connection with a May 10 car accident in Florida that killed three people and seriously injured a fourth.
Hayes was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury, the Largo Police Department said in a news release Friday.
Officers responded to the crash between a Dodge Durango and a Kia Soul at around 1:43 p.m. on May 10 at the intersection of Orange View Drive and Ridge Road, police said.
“As a result of the crash, two children who were rear passengers in the Kia Soul were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene: Jabari Elijah Solomon (10-years-old) and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria (4-years-old),” police said in the news release. “The driver of the Kia Soul, 78-year-old, Gail Price was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died from her injuries on Sunday, May 11, 2025.”
Herbert Riveria, 58, who was sat in the passenger side, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and survived, police said.
During the investigation into the accident, it was found that Hayes was driving the Dodge Durango dangerously and at a high rate of speed, according to police. The college athlete had crossed three lanes of traffic from the curb lane to the median lane, rapidly and dangerously, about five seconds before the crash.
“Moments later, Hayes abruptly re-entered the curb lane, again crossing all three lanes without signaling,” police said. “At that point, Hayes’ vehicle collided with the 2017 Kia Soul, which was lawfully executing a left-hand turn westbound onto Orange View Drive.”
Authorities were able to confirm through a search warrant on Hayes’ vehicle that he was traveling 70.8 mph five seconds before the crash and “accelerated to a maximum speed of 78.9 mph in a posted 40 mph zone at the time of the crash,” police said.
“The investigation concluded that Adarius Hayes’ egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions demonstrated a willful and deliberate disregard for the safety of others, constituting reckless driving,” police said. “These actions directly led to the tragic deaths of the three victims.”
The college athlete turned himself in at the police department on Friday and was taken to the Pinellas County Jail. It is not clear if Hayes has an attorney at this time.
NBC News has reached out to a representative for Hayes.
Hayes was indefinitely suspended from “all athletic related activities” following the charges announced against him per the University of Miami’s athletic department policy, according to Camron Ghorbi, a spokesperson for the university’s athletic department.
“We will have no further comment,” Ghorbi said.
The investigation into the accident remains ongoing, police said.
