EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-winning Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen lands in Venice this weekend with dark comedy The Last Viking, reuniting him with actors Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas who have appeared in all of his films.

Jensen’s sixth feature, The Last Viking revolves around two brothers Anker (Kaas) and Manfred (Mikkelsen). When Anker is released from prison following a fifteen-year sentence for robbery, he is looking forward to getting his hands on the loot

Manfred, who was given the task of hiding the heist money, has developed a mental disorder and can no longer remember where he hid it. Together, the brothers embark on an unexpected journey to locate the money and discover who they really are.

Deadline can reveal a first clip setting the scene for the dark comedy ahead of its Out of Competition premiere in Venice.

“The film explores how our identities are shaped by the perception of others, in the hope that, despite challenges, we can discover our true selves,” says Jensen.

“The focus is on being who you truly want to be. The film highlights that people are more than one thing, encouraging a more holistic outlook that is inherently more forgiving and less judgmental. Also, if you know you are more than one thing, you won’t be as easily offended or take things to heart.”

The Last Viking is produced by Zentropa Entertainments4 in co-production with Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst with support from Danish Film Institute, FilmFyn, Eurimages, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, Swedish Film Institute, and in co-production with Nordisk Film Distribution and TV 2 Danmark

TrustNordisk handles International sales.
