The Los Angeles Rams won the NFC West thanks to a brilliant second half last season, and some view them as a potential dark horse heading into 2025.
While the Rams definitely boast impressive talent on both sides of the ball, they do have one very clear hole defensively: the cornerback position.

Los Angeles’ pass defense ranked 20th in the NFL last season, and that had a whole lot to do with its rather shoddy cornerback situation.
The Rams didn’t do much to address the problem over the last several months and seem to be relying on the tandem of Ahkello Witherspoon and Darious Williams to hold serve this fall, which could spell major problems for Sean McVay’s club.
That’s why Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton has linked Los Angeles to a rather significant trade, proposing that the Rams send a fifth-round draft pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Greg Newsome II.
“By the trade deadline, the Browns may be strong sellers. Newsome would be an appealing asset,” Moton wrote. “Though he’s coming off his worst season, the 25-year-old put together three consecutive solid campaigns as a versatile inside-outside cover defender. Newsome can strengthen the Rams’ pass defense, which ranked 20th in yards allowed in 2024.”
The catch is that Cleveland may not be so willing to move Newsome now that fellow cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. is out for the year due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. Yes, the Browns have Denzel Ward on the other side, but their cornerback depth behind Ward and Newsome is very limited.
Of course, Cleveland’s thought process could change by the trade deadline, in which case the Rams could comprise a perfect landing spot for Newsome.

The former first-round pick registered just 27 tackles, an interception and five passes defended in 2024, but he displayed notable promise over his first three NFL seasons between 2021 and 2023.
If nothing else, Newsome may very well present LA with a better option than what it currently has at the position.
