PHOENIX — As drivers get ready to leave for Labor Day weekend, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wants them to know that all of the state’s highways are scheduled to be open.
The department said that work on some ongoing highway improvement projects will continue, which will lead to some ramps being closed, but no full highway or freeway closures are planned anywhere in Arizona between Friday afternoon and Monday night.

To help ease traffic north of the Valley over the weekend, ADOT said that the flex lanes on Interstate 17 will be open for northbound traffic on Friday and Saturday and southbound traffic on Sunday and Monday.
The flex lanes allow for two extra lanes to be added in one direction between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point.
ADOT added that it expects the following highways to be busy over the holiday weekend:
- State Route 87 between Fountain Hills and Payson.
- U.S. Highway 93 between Wickenburg and the Hoover Dam.
- Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson.
- I-10 between the Valley and the California state line.
- Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and the California state line.
The department is asking drivers to prepare by planning for trips to take longer than expected, especially if they are traveling on Friday or Monday afternoon.
ADOT also advises drivers that highways could close due to crashes, disabled vehicles, wildfires or other reasons.
In case of heavy traffic or an unplanned highway closure, ADOT said drivers should have an emergency kit containing water, blankets, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, batteries, snacks and a small tool kit. Drivers should also make sure their cellphones are fully charged and, if traveling with young children, make sure to have extra diapers accessible.
What freeway ramps will be closed over Labor Day weekend?
