TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s now been one week since August was released from UAB hospital after suffering major injuries on Deshler High School’s campus.

Tuscumbia police announced Thursday that the case has been transferred to the Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office.

What’s more, the department said the Madison County District Attorney’s Office is assisting them in the case.

According to the latest update, that’s because all of the subjects and witnesses are under the age of 18.

News 19 spoke with August Borden’s parents, Kristen and Drew Van Devender, early Thursday. They told News 19, they were informed that police have spoken with everyone who was there

“They are getting very close to processing those facts, so we can get some resolution here in the very near future, we are waiting patiently and desperately,” Drew Van Devender said.

The couple tells News 19, his recovery is progressing slowly, but every day he is getting a little better.

“He’s getting his personality back, he’s smiling and conversates with us and joking, but still a lot of rest though, and healing, he’s liking the tests he’s receiving from his friends,” Kristen Van Devender said.

News 19 asked Drew and Kristen if August happens to remember anything from that day, when he received the injuries.

“We ask him every day, so you have any recollection of it and he says, ‘Drew, I just don’t, I can’t remember anything,’” Kristen Van Devender said.

A letter was sent to parents in the Tuscumbia City School system regarding the situation that happened last week, which sent August to UAB hospital.

Kristen and Drew say they were disheartened by how the school addressed the situation, and that they believe something is being covered up.

” It’s sad that they didn’t mention our son and the incident and that they weren’t thinking of him, that kind of, we would’ve liked them to maybe include the family’s difficulty that we’ve had and Augusts difficulty, his journey to recovery, would have been nice if they mentioned that, we were disheartened when we didn’t see that” Kristen Van Devender said.

The Van Devenders said they believe their son did not fall down the stairs, and that someone knows exactly what happened.

“If you’re afraid of someone in the administration or a coach or someone who might get upset with you for doing what’s right, come forward, tell your story, the truth needs to be told, until we can all heal and move forward,” Drew Van Devender said.
