Last summer, the Green Bay Packers gave Jordan Love a four-year, $220 million contract extension. This summer, the Jacksonville Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence a five-year deal worth $275 million with $200 million guaranteed.

Those deals put Lawrence and Love in the top five in the league in average annual value, with Dak Prescott ($60 m), Josh Allen and Joe Burrow (both at $55 m), on top of the list.

As far as Allen and Burrow go, they have led their teams to AFC title games, and Burrow led the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI before losing to the Los Angeles Rams.

NFL Exec Questioned QB Contracts

For Prescott, Lawrence, and Love, those contracts are a bit puzzling, and one NFL executive recently questioned the big money being paid to some signal-callers, per Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

“Now, we’re paying guys just to pay guys,” an executive said.

Howe added to that sentiment: “And frankly, teams are skeptical of the contracts handed out to QBs like Lawrence, Tagovailoa and Love — QBs who have yet to prove themselves in pivotal moments.”

Lawrence has one playoff win in his career, which came in the 2023 AFC Wild Card round in a game where the Los Angeles Chargers led 27-0.

Prescott has a 2-5 postseason record in his career and has yet to reach the NFC title game, and Love has gone 1-2 so far in the postseason.

The remainder of the top 10 in QB AAV is as follows:

  • Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins: $53 million
  • Jared Goff, Detroit Lions: $53 million
  • Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers: $53 million
  • Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers: $53 million
  • Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens: $52 million

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, fresh off a Super Bowl win, is at $51 million AAV, while Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes is at $45 million AAV.

Purdy just signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension in the offseason to move him above Herbert and Jackson in AAV.

On Thursday, the Packers did pull off a stunning trade for superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons, so that certainly helps improve Love’s chances of leading Green Bay to a Super Bowl in the next few years.

But, there are still questions about the current state of the quarterback market, and what the future holds for the next wave of signal-callers looking for a shiny new contract extension.
