San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey endured a nightmarish season in 2024, playing in just four games due to an Achilles injury that plagued him throughout the year.

Given McCaffrey’s rather checkered medical history, there has been some legitimate concern surrounding the superstar playmaker heading into 2025, but Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport sees better days in McCaffrey’s future.

Davenport listed McCaffrey among seven players set to go from “fantasy duds to studs” with Week 1 on the horizon.

“Simply put, McCaffrey is the king of risk/reward picks. He will either make your season or break out. There is no middle ground,” Davenport wrote. “This is going to be a ‘make’ season. From all indications, McCaffrey is 100 percent healthy. And while some fantasy managers have been made skittish by San Francisco’s acquisition of Brian Robinson Jr., the reality is that given all the injuries the 49ers have at wide receiver McCaffrey could easily see his highest target share since joining the team.”

We know how good McCaffrey can be when he is right. Two years ago, he led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards to go along with 14 touchdowns on 5.4 yards per carry. He also hauled in 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven scores, finishing third in MVP voting for his efforts.

The problem is that McCaffrey is now 29, which is fairly old for a halfback. He also has plenty of injury mileage on his body, going back to the days when he played in just 10 games between 2020 and 2021.

Hopefully, the Castle Rock, Co. native is able to stay healthy much like he did in 2022 and 2023, when he appeared in 33 out of a possible 34 games between the two campaigns.

If McCaffrey is able to stay on the field, the 49ers’ offense should instantly be in much better shape than it was last season. That being said, penciling McCaffrey in for a full campaign is definitely dangerous given his unfortunate track record.
