BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — For the first time in history, voters in Homewood, Mountain Brook and Columbiana have elected female mayors.
On Tuesday, Jennifer Andress was elected mayor of Homewood, Graham Smith was elected mayor of Mountain Brook and Lisa Strickland Davis was elected mayor of Columbiana. All three will take office on November 3.
Andress said she is eager to take on the new role and hopes her leadership will inspire others.
“It’s been really great to move up into the mayor position. I’m really excited about it and looking forward to hopefully inspiring a whole generation of young women out there,” she said.
Smith said being the city’s first female mayor isn’t her main focus, serving residents is.
“I hopefully just want to focus on doing the best job that I can for the residents. And there’s always been this gospel hymn that I remember. It’s called ‘Let the Work I Do Speak for Me.’ And I hope that that is all people judge me on,” Smith said. “If the residents can just be proud of the work that I’ve done for our community, that’s my goal.”
Columbiana’s mayor-elect Lisa Strickland Davis used the word inspiring to describe this victory
“While the job will be no different than a male‘s role. The fact that younger generations of girls will have someone they can look up to in a leadership position in our community is inspiring. If I can do it, they can do it. To be in a position as a role model or mentor in our community is a job I take seriously,” said Strickland Davis. “If one little girl says ‘I want to be mayor one day,’ it’s exciting. It’s not just a man’s world anymore. We have lots of women owned small businesses in Columbiana and I think it’s great for young girls to see.”
