HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville City leaders are taking another step forward in the process of land expansion.

Tuesday night, the Huntsville Planning Commission approved the zoning plan for more than 500 acres in North Huntsville.

This land was annexed a few weeks ago, which means it is already in the hands of the city, but Tuesday’s meeting determined what will go on it.

The decision is for 572.48 acres located north of Bob Wade Lane and bisected by Mt. Lebanon Road. The land is a part of a comprehensive plan for both commercial and residential construction.

Lady Kassama is planner 3 for the City of Huntsville.

She said the approval of the zoning will allow for a variety of homes, apartments, offices and hotels.

“Moving forward now, this property can be developed to the front as a commercial for commercial use, and then towards the back of the property will be residential,” said Kassama.

She said they made the decision based on what they believe is best for the growing community.

“We need to ensure that that property will bring benefit to the community rather than a problem down the line,” said Kassama.

She said this is what they call a “long-term development,” and with this size of land, it could take anywhere from 10 to 20 years until it is complete.

Although the planning commission did approve the zoning proposal tonight, the decision will ultimately lie in the hands of the Huntsville City Council. They will make the final approval vote on September 25th.
