As he prepares for his first season as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer has had to deal with more than his fair share of off-field drama. Following their preseason finale, he weighed in on the latest chapter of the organization’s ongoing saga with a homegrown star.

In the second half of the Cowboys’ preseason finale with the Atlanta Falcons, Micah Parsons went viral for all the wrong reasons. Though he was in attendance, the star linebacker wasn’t in uniform and was seen lying on the trainer’s table.

Following the game, Schottenheimer lightly addressed the situation. He didn’t want to speak on it fully because he didn’t have all the facts. However, he relayed to the media that he plans to sit down with Parsons and discuss his actions.

“Without talking to Micah, I need to figure out what he was doing and why he was doing it,” Schottenheimer said on a conference call Saturday, per ESPN. “So, until I talk to him, I’m obviously not going to talk about it.”

Brian Schottenheimer reflects on sit-down meeting with Cowboys star Micah Parsons

Schottenheimer addressed the media Tuesday to discuss the team’s roster cuts. That said, the topic of Parsons did happen to come up during his availability.

The Cowboys coach mentioned that he and Parsons did meet and had a conversation that lasted over an hour.

“We talked about a lot of different things,” Schottenheimer said, per The Athletic. “Addressed a number of different issues and things like that. At this point, I’m going to keep that between he and I, but we have a very, very good conversation.”

Since training camp got underway, Parsons’ standoff with the Cowboys has evolved into a worst-case scenario. That said, despite how things have unfolded, Schottenheimer remains confident he’ll be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Parsons has been adamant about signing a contract extension, but it doesn’t seem like one is coming before the regular season gets underway. While he and Jerry Jones had some positive talks back in March, there have been little to no advancements since then.

This has resulted in a public back-and-forth between the two, and the star linebacker putting in a trade request.

Seeing that a back injury has kept him limited since the start of camp, Parsons’ availability moving forward remains a major question mark.
