Argentina: Milei pelted with stones on campaign trail

President was pelted with stones on Wednesday as his campaign caravan cut through Buenos Aires province.

Milei came away unhurt, his spokesperson said. But the incident cut short the rally and ratcheted up tensions just days before provincial elections in the capital and ahead of midterm elections in October.

The Argentinian president was whisked from the scene by his security but sustained no injuries after his motorcade was attacked, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni posted on X.

Milei is campaigning for the October midterm elections and was riding in the back of a pickup truck while greeting supporters in the city of Lomas de Zamora, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the capital, when people began throwing plants, rocks and bottles at his vehicle.

The elections are cast as a test of Milei’s popularity and performance two years after the libertarian TV pundit was elected on a bid to eliminate the country’s chronic fiscal deficits and end spiraling inflation.

Who else was in the motorcade?

The caravan was carrying the president and his sister, Karina Milei, along with other officials. They then quickly left the scene.

“Out with Milei!” protesters shouted. Milei ducked inside the vehicle as security guards scrambled to shield him from rocks.

Scuffles subsequently broke out between supporters and opponents of the libertarian leader.

A woman, who was supporting Milei, suffered rib injuries. She was taken away by ambulance.

Minutes before the incident, the president had addressed the scandal sparked following the leak of audio recordings by the former head of the disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo.

In the recordings, Spagnuolo suggested that Karina Milei pocketed money destined for people with disabilities.
