Travis Kelce’s father, Ed Kelce, has revealed new details about his son’s engagement to pop star Taylor Swift, including where it took place and how long the two have been engaged.
Why It Matters
The engagement of two high-profile figures in music and professional sports drew intense public and media attention due to the pair’s sizable, active followings and because their relationship played out in public settings over more than two years.
The pair’s engagement drew political reaction, including from President Donald Trump.
What To Know
The couple announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon, sending social media into a frenzy.
Speaking to local media outlet News 5 Cleveland, Ed Kelce said that the engagement happened at a garden in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
“He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘let’s go out and have a glass of wine,’ … they got out there, and that’s when he asked her, and it was beautiful,” Ed Kelce said, according to the outlet.
Travis, an NFL star player for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Swift had been publicly dating for years, with the other making appearances at games and concerts.
According to Ed, his son proposed to Swift almost two weeks ago, a little more than two years after they became one of the most notable celebrity power couples.
“Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago,” Ed Kelce added. “He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event.”
Ed added, “I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.” Ed noted that Scott Swift, Taylor’s father, also told him something similar.
Travis’ father revealed that he was at a public Sunday practice for the Philadelphia Eagles when he got the call from Travis and Taylor.
“So, at that practice … I got a FaceTime call from them, and as soon as I saw the FaceTime, I saw it was Travis, and then I saw Taylor there with him, I knew what they were going to say, and they, you know, let us know,” Ed Kelce said.
What People Are Saying
Responding to a reporter asking for his reaction to the news on Tuesday, Trump said: “Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player, he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”
Kansas City Chiefs on X on Tuesday: “Today is a fairytale Congrats to Travis and Taylor—we’re excited to have you as a permanent member of the Chiefs Kingdom family!”
