A Missouri farmer told a Republican representative to take his “head out of Trump’s a**” during a town hall event.
Resident Fred Higginbotham criticized Missouri Republican Mark Alford during an event in Bolivar, at Southwest Baptist University in which the GOP politician fielded questions from his constituents about a range of topics.
Why It Matters
The confrontation is the latest in a string of incidents in which Republicans have been booed at town halls and other events by angry constituents. Issues that have caused anger among constituents include President Donald Trump‘s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which affects Medicaid and veteran’s health care.
Town hall conflict has caused some Republican politicians to cancel meetings or hold them virtually and some Democratic town halls have also been targeted.
Alford’s district leans Republican. He was first elected in 2022 and won his re-election in 2024 with more than 71 percent of the vote. Anger directed towards him could signal wider partisan realignment in the area.
What To Know
Higginbotham, who voted for Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, said at the event that he had inherited a farm from his father but was struggling to fund it.
“I am pissed, and I am pissed at you,” he says in a C-Span clip of the meeting viewed 913,99 times on X, formerly Twitter.
“Get Trump out of office,” he added. “The man is a dictator. He knows nothing about what he talks about. I listened to him for about a half hour today and I got sick at all the lies he brought up.”
He added that he might “lose” his farm because of funding issues from the federal government. He called for higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. “Do you think we’re idiots?” he said. “Do you think we don’t pay taxes?”
“You know nothing about what a working class citizen does,” he said. “You need to take your head out of Trump’s a** and start doing your representation of us.”
In response, other members of the audience clapped and cheered in support.
“I appreciate your passion, your love for our country,” Alford said in his reply. “Owning a small business is tough, thank you for that and thank you for being a good father and grandfather.”
“Our farmers have not had a great deal,” he continued and said his staff would speak to Higginbotham after the event to deal with his concerns.
Despite this confrontation, other audience members were less combative. Dusty Ross, a Democrat said: “Thanks for being here. I appreciate you giving everyone a chance to speak.”
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump, on Truth Social in March: “Paid ‘troublemakers’ are attending Republican Town Hall Meetings. It is all part of the game for the Democrats, but just like our big LANDSLIDE ELECTION, it’s not going to work for them!”
What Happens Next
Alford is hosting 15 town halls in 15 counties in his congressional district over the next few days.
