Gavin Newsom’s press team has unveiled a new nickname for Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem following her repeated comments about California.
The now-infamous Governor Newsom Press Office account on X branded Noem as “Kowgirl Kristi,” warning that she would “ride into America’s nightmares.”
Newsweek contacted Noem via the Department of Homeland Security for a response to the comments via email.
Why It Matters
In recent weeks, the official Newsom press office X account has also taken to mimicking and mocking Donald Trump‘s style, posting in block capitals and using nicknames for opponents such as “Just Dance Vance” for vice president JD Vance. Trump had repeatedly called Newsom “Newscum” on his Truth Social website.
Governor Newsom has attracted national media attention for backing a redistricting bill that would likely see the Republicans lose five seats in the House of Representatives. The move is a response to a Trump-backed Texas bill that could give the GOP five extra House seats from the Lone Star State. The California bill is designed to take effect only if the Texas one is ratified.
What To Know
In another of the Newsom press office’s provocative posts on X, the governor’s team branded Noem as a “nightmare” for American citizens.
The account said: “NEW CHARACTER ALERT: The Kosplay Kristi universe just expanded!! Meet Kowgirl Kristi—riding into America’s nightmares near you.”
The post was accompanied by a sports card, likely AI-generated, of a cartoon version of Noem in a cowboy hat.
Newsom’s team has previously called Noem “Commander Cosplay” characterizing her actions on securing the border in California and neighboring states as a pretense.
The nickname is the latest in a long line of posts from Newsom’s team that emulates the style of President Trump- provocative and unashamedly boisterous.
Newsom has experienced a new boost in early polling among Democrats looking for a 2028 contender, and drawn new ire from Republicans frustrated with his rhetoric.
On Thursday, Star Sports offered odds of Newsom winning the 2028 presidential election of 11/2 (15.4 percent), an improvement on the 7/1 (12.5 percent) recorded one week previously.
Overall, the California governor is now the second favorite to win in 2028 according to Star Sports, behind only vice president JD Vance on 11/4 (26.7 percent) and ahead of House Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in third with 12/1 (7.7 percent).
What People Are Saying
Star Sports political betting analyst William Kedjanyi told Newsweek: “Gavin Newsom has always been a well-recognized figure in American politics but recently he’s asserted himself as a leader of the resistance against President Donald Trump, especially with regards to more combative communications and taking Trump head on and getting under his skin. He’s now 5/2 from 7/2 to be declared the Democratic Presidential Nominee in 2028…
“Interestingly the latest Politico poll from California had Newsom leading Harris with Democratic and left-leaning voters in the state. With his increased profile and increased recognition, we’ve cut Newsom from 7/1 into 11/2. The Democrats are also 10/11 to be the winning party, with the Republicans within reaching distance at 21/20.”
