Fed governor Lisa Cook hires Hunter Biden lawyer Abbe Lowell to fight Trump’s bid to fire her

Embattled Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has tapped former Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell to fight President Trump’s effort to oust her from the central bank over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud.

Lowell, who is also defending New York Attorney General Letitia James from similar allegations leveled by the Trump administration, vowed to file a lawsuit Tuesday after the president announced he was dismissing Cook “for cause.”

“President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” Lowell said in a statement.

“His attempt to fire her, based solely on a referral letter, lacks any factual or legal basis,” the prominent white-collar attorney added. “We will be filing a lawsuit challenging this illegal action.”

Lowell, a former partner at white-shoe Winston & Strawn, started his own practice in May — and it’s already stacked with clients under fire from the Trump administration.

Current Lowell and Associates clients include lawyer Mark Zaid, who counseled the anonymous whistleblower whose report on a 2019 call between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky led to the former’s impeachment; and former Department of Homeland Security official and “Anonymous” op-ed author Miles Taylor, both of whom had their security clearance stripped by the 47th president earlier this year.

Lowell is also representing several former Justice Department prosecutors fired by the Trump administration for their role in Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases and a New Jersey influencer charged in a multi-million dollar investment fraud scheme who is challenging Alina Habba’s authority as the US attorney for the Garden State.

Lowell previously defended former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, against felony gun and tax charges. Hunter was convicted of all counts following his Delaware weapons trial and pleaded guilty to tax fraud in California before being pardoned by his father in December 2024.

The Washington-based attorney has also represented corrupt former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and  2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards.

During Trump’s first term, Lowell represented first daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, amid congressional and FBI probes into Russia collusion allegations.

Trump’s effort to fire Lowell’s latest client comes after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte accused Cook in a criminal referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi of falsifying bank documents and property records to secure better loan terms.

Pulte alleged in an X post that Cook had designated a condo in Atlanta as her primary residence in July 2021, just two weeks after taking a loan on her Michigan home, which she also declared as a primary residence.

A Federal Reserve spokesperson noted in a statement that “Cook has indicated through her personal attorney that she will promptly challenge this action in court and seek a judicial decision that would confirm her ability to continue to fulfill her responsibilities as a Senate-confirmed member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.”

“Congress, through the Federal Reserve Act, directs that governors serve in long, fixed terms and may be removed by the president only ‘for cause,’” the spokesperson continued, addting that “long tenures and removal protections for governors serve as a vital safeguard, ensuring that monetary policy decisions are based on data, economic analysis, and the long-term interests of the American people.”

Lowell’s office did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
