The New York Yankees are trying to play their best baseball down the stretch and make a deep run in October. Jazz Chisholm Jr. will play a huge role if the team wants to make it back to the World Series.
Chisholm was an All-Star this season and was great for the Yankees after they acquired him at the trade deadline last year. He entered Monday with a .239 batting average, but his .818 OPS has been a huge part of the Yankees’ offense.
On Sunday, Chisholm hit his 23rd and 24th home runs of the season, as the Yankees avoided being swept by the Boston Red Sox. Those home runs were also his 100th and 101st career home runs.
Milestone home runs are always a big deal in a player’s career, but Chisholm’s came on a night when he was playing through some grief.
“It felt kind of surreal,” Chisholm told reporters in a clip posted by SNY when asked how the 100th home run felt. “I lost my best friend (Saturday). Today felt like a different type of day, especially with the 100th home run coming (Sunday).”
Chisholm had a monster June, but his average has declined in July and August. However, his power is still showing. His 24 home runs this year tied a career high, which he set last season.
The two-time All-Star has done nothing but perform for the Yankees since being acquired. He has been flexible in the field and continues to be a steady player in the lineup.
