The New York Yankees have watched Anthony Volpe struggle all season and finally benched him on Sunday. He was not scheduled to be in the lineup on Monday either, but Aaron Boone has revealed when Volpe will be used regularly once again.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, Boone said on Monday that Volpe will be deployed regularly once again starting Tuesday.
“I view Anthony as our shortstop,” Boone told Kirschner.
Volpoe has not only carried over his lackluster offense from his first two seasons, but his defense has fallen off a cliff. He is a former Gold Glove Award winner, but he entered Monday leading all of baseball in errors.
Fans will not be happy with Boone’s decision to make Volpe a starter again. The criticism of Boone and Volpe has been loud this season, and many fans are even calling for Boone to be fired.
His decision to keep Volpe in a starting role for so long is part of the reason fans are frustrated with him. The team acquired Jose Caballero at the trade deadline, so unlike the early part of the season, the team actually has a player it can deploy in Volpe’s place.
Nonetheless, Volpe seems to be a regular in the lineup again soon. Boone used him as a defensive replacement on Sunday, which is puzzling considering his poor defense. He should be available again off the bench on Monday before making his return to the lineup on Tuesday.
Boone is not doing himself any favors with the fan base with this move. His constant support of Volpe has had fans questioning his ability to manage the team to a World Series all season. After he finally put Volpe on the bench, fans thought maybe Boon had realized what they all knew. However, Boone’s decision to go back to Volpe will once again start the firing discourse.
