When Hannah and Pryce Ancona bought a 960-square-foot bungalow in San Antonio in 2018, they assumed that it would be a starter home where they would stay for only a few years.

The couple had just welcomed their first child, Shepherd, now 7, and relocated from Madison, Wis., to be closer to Ms. Ancona’s family.

After the arrival of their second child, Rosemary, now 5, the bungalow, which was originally built in the 1930s and cost them $227,000, began to feel cramped.

“We lived in it for about three and a half years before we started thinking we needed to move,” said Mr. Ancona, 31, who works in electronic health records management.

“But it was sad,” he said, because they had come to adore the neighborhood, build a sense of community and collect memories tied to the location.
