Gen Z adults are rethinking how much they spend on their romantic lives, with more than half saying they don’t spend anything on dates each month, according to Bank of America’s 2025 Better Money Habits study.
The study, conducted by Ipsos in April 2025, surveyed more than 900 Gen Z adults aged 18 to 28.
The report found that 53% of Gen Z men and 54% of women spend $0 on dates, while another quarter reports spending less than $100 a month. About 30% of women say the same.
Even among those in relationships, costs remain modest: 43% of Gen Z couples not living together and 48% of couples living together reported spending only $1 to $100 per month on dating.
About a quarter of Gen Z respondents also reported skipping social events with friends to save money.
The results highlight how inflation, higher living costs, and other factors have impacted spending habits among Gen Z.
While Gen Z doesn’t spend much on dating, the report found that financial values are important among young adults choosing partners.
Nearly four out of five Gen Z respondents (78%) said financial responsibility is an important trait in a significant other. Large majorities also prioritized financial behaviors (70%), attitudes (70%), and security (70%) when evaluating potential relationships.
