An elderly man was stabbed to death at a residence in South L.A. and the suspect was arrested with multiple self-inflicted wounds after a prolonged standoff over the weekend.
A press release sent out by LAPD on Monday morning states that officers with the Southwest Division were dispatched to the 2300 block of West 23rd Street after a radio call regarding an “assault with a deadly weapon ambulance shooting” around 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
“The comments of the call stated that the victim, a 90-year-old male, was down in front of the house,” the press release says.
Officers arrived at the residence and observed the elderly victim on the ground, but as they approached him, a man “present[ed] himself from inside the residence” and opened fire at authorities.
The man, later identified as Andrew Smith, then retreated out of sight into the residence. Due to the nature of the incident, officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from the SWAT team.
A rescue operation was conducted by SWAT personnel and the L.A. Fire Department’s Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEAM) that successfully moved the 90-year-old man to safety; however, TEMS personnel declared him deceased at the scene from apparent stab wounds, the press release states.
The victim’s name was not released, and the relationship between him and the suspect isn’t known.
“After a prolonged standoff with Smith failing to surrender, SWAT element members entered the residence and located him in a second-floor bedroom, where he was taken into custody without further incident,” LAPD’s press release says. “Smith was transported to a local hospital and treated for numerous self-inflicted stab wounds and lacerations. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.”
The press release indicated that Smith, 40, was not struck by gunfire.
According to LAPD, a loaded 9mm assault rifle-style semi-automatic pistol, three high-capacity magazines, a large folding knife and two large fixed blade knives were recovered from the scene and booked as evidence.
The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division and the Robbery Homicide Division are investigating the incident.
