The Kansas City Chiefs are once again viewed as a top-tier Super Bowl contender in the AFC entering the 2025 NFL season. With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, that will usually be the case.

After making it all the way to the big game last season, the Chiefs were dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles. They were denied a three-peat championship. That has been on Mahomes and company’s minds all offseason long.

Looking at the roster, most of the pieces are in place to be a contender again. However, there is one noticeable flaw.

Behind Mahomes, Kansas City does not have a great running back room.

That is a fact that was noted by Jesse Newell of The Athletic, who wrote a very sound argument about why the Chiefs’ running back situation is less than ideal.

“Beyond starter Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs’ depth at running back is a mess,” Newell wrote. “Veteran Kareem Hunt, 30, is more of a role player as a short-yardage specialist who isn’t likely to help create the big plays. Carson Steele and Elijah Mitchell have yet to prove much in camp, and rookie Brashard Smith is playing as a hybrid receiver/running back after playing wideout earlier in his college career.”

Kansas City is among the group of teams looking to make a trade or upgrade at the running back position. Pacheco is a great piece, but the Chiefs need more.

Taking pressure off of Mahomes should always be a priority. Making a move for another playmaker in the backfield would be a wise investment for Kansas City.

CBS Sports analyst Cody Benjamin has suggested one potential trade target for the Chiefs. He thinks that Dallas Cowboys running back Miles Sanders could be an option.

No matter what Kansas City chooses to do, the team cannot afford to risk having a bad running game. Andy Reid has relied quite a bit on the running game over the past couple of years. It will be interesting to see if the Chiefs do acquire another running back.

Expect to hear more about this situation in the near future. For now, the latest report is that Kansas City is looking to address their running back issue.
