A BMW ran a red light and slammed into a pickup truck outside Oxnard on Sunday, killing both occupants of the truck and injuring the BMW driver, who is believed to have been intoxicated at the time, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. at Central and Santa Clara avenues, the CHP said in a news release.

The driver of a white Chevrolet pickup was headed south on Santa Clara and entered the intersection with Central just as a white BMW headed west on Central failed to stop at a red light, the CHP said.

“As the BMW entered the intersection it crashed perpendicular into the driver side of the Chevrolet,” officials said. “Both vehicles came to rest on the southwest corner of the intersection.”

Both people in the pickup, the 75-year-old man behind the wheel and his passenger, a 58-year-old woman, were declared dead at the scene. Both hailed from Piru.

The BMW driver, a 19-year-old Santa Paula man, was taken Ventura County Medical Center to be treated for moderate injuries. He’s also been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Traffic at the intersection was closed for eight hours after the crash.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Ventura Area CHP office at 805-662-2640.
