An owner who forgot to lock her dog’s crate was left speechless when her pup did the unexpected with the chance to have freedom after the house.
During the night, the golden retriever puppy named Maui was calmly resting in his crate when his paw hit the door. The door swung open. As it turned out, his owner forgot to lock the crate before going to bed.
Some dogs might have seen the open door as an invitation to explore the house, taking the opportunity to exhibit unwanted behavior. But not Maui. He used the crate for its intended use—a safe place to feel secure and reduce anxiety.
The August 11 Instagram video, posted to the account @lilgoldenmaui, showed the pup unfazed about the owner’s mistake. Instead, Maui prioritized his “beauty sleep” over being mischievous, which left the owner completely surprised, she told Newsweek.
“We had only had him home with us for a week, and when I woke up and saw the door to the crate open, I had a mini heart attack,” she said. “But, he was right inside!”
She looked back at the pet camera footage and found Maui did not even stand up when the door opened. He remained unbothered, stretching out his legs with the extra room.
The owner added a picture at the end of the clip of Maui in the morning. His head spilled out over the edge. He remained fast asleep with the rest of his body inside the crate. While his sleeping position looked uncomfortable, Maui didn’t budge.
While she got away with a break, this owner now knows to triple-check the crate is locked.

With over 462,000 views on Instagram, viewers flooded the comment section with praise for Maui’s restraint when the open door provided him the opportunity for freedom. They called him sweet, cuddly and cute.

“Just more leg space for him to stretch and sleep in the weirdest positions ever!! Dogs are so funny,” another person commented.
