Although workplace romances have long been commonplace on TV, Ayo Edebiri intends for her The Bear character to keep it strictly professional.

The Golden Globe winner recently addressed the onscreen chemistry between her character Syd and Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmy, explaining why “it would be so crazy” for the pair to end up together.

“I feel like we’ve been saying since [Season] 1, but I don’t know if people are starting to believe us now,” she told Vanity Fair. “I do think that like there’s something about seeing people where they’re really passionate or where they’re excelling at something, it can feel exciting and charged. It’s a hard thing to talk about because we never get it right. I don’t know, my job is to do the thing, and then how you interpret it is how you interpret it.”

Edebiri added, “But I do think it’s professional, and I do think if anything were to happen, it would not be the show that we’re making. And I also think it would be so crazy. That man is crazy and that girl is a bad communicator! The restaurant would blow up in like three seconds if anything ever happened.”

Created by Christopher Storer, the FX on Hulu series follows young fine dining chef Carmy as he returns to his Chicago neighborhood to run the family sandwich shop after the death of his brother Mikey (Jon Bernthal). With the help of his new sous-chef Syd, Carmey transforms the eatery into an upscale establishment.

On the show, Carmy has previously had a romance with childhood friend Claire (Molly Gordon), but the couple broke up in Season 2. She returns in Season 4, during which they appear to have some unresolved feelings.

After Season 4 premiered in June, FX renewed the show for Season 5 in July.
