A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed late Saturday at a gas station in Pico Rivera while waiting for his relative to get off work, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives are searching for the gunman.
The shooting was reported around 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the 8800 block of Whittier Boulevard, according to LASD. The victim, described only as a 13-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
KTLA’s Omar Lewis reported from a 76 station near Rosemead Boulevard and Whittier Boulevard, where investigators worked through the night collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Lieutenant Michael Modica said investigators had few details on the suspect, who ran away after shots were fired. “We’re early on in the investigative process right now. All I can say is that he fled the location he was last seen running away from on foot — there did not appear to be a robbery or an argument or anything prior.”
The lieutenant added that the boy was likely at the gas station because his relative works there.
“He does stay in the area while his relative is working,” said Modica. “He hangs out waiting for the relative to get off work.”
Residents told KTLA they’re concerned following another deadly shooting days earlier at a different gas station on Washington Boulevard near Passengers Boulevard, about two miles away. Investigators do not believe the two shootings are connected, and suspects in both cases remain on the run.
“There is no additional information available at this time,” LASD added.
Anyone with information is asked to call the LASD Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
